IPL 6 Recent Updates (updated daily)

IPL 6 Recent Updates

Manvinder Bisla after Completing his Half - Century

Statistical highlights: Manvinder Bisla records third fifty in IPL history

Kolkata Knight Riders' six-wicket win on Friday is their sixth in eleven games against Kings XI Punjab at the IPL - winning % 54.54. Here are some of the other statistical highs from the game played at the Eden Gardens.

The sequence of losses might have something to do with Eden Gardens being nowhere near as full as it usually is for a Kolkata Knight Riders match, but the still-sizeable crowd was treated to a long overdue Kolkata win on Friday (April 26) over Kings XI Punjab. Playing the lead in Kolkata's successful run chase was Manvinder Bisla, who carried his bat, scoring an unbeaten 51 from 44 balls, to seal victory by six wickets after Punjab had been restricted to 149 for 6.

Watson, Faulkner Give Royals Big Win over Sunrisers

Australian duo James Faulkner and Shane Watson combined brilliantly to take the Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2013.In a match which looked like it could be over in a couple of hours, the Sunrisers fought back brilliantly from 29 for six to post 144 for nine from their 20 overs, thanks to an outstanding half-century from Darren Sammy, with James Faulkner picking up a five-for for the Royals.
Watson was unstoppable in the chase, ending on an unbeaten 98 from just 53 balls, to guide the Royals to 146 for two in just 17.5 overs.
The Royals built a solid base for the chase courtesy Rahul Dravid and Shane Watson, despite losing Ajinkya Rahane in the third over.
Dale Steyn dismissed Rahane, after the opener only found the toe end of the bat while trying to go for an almighty heave, with Kumar Sangakkara taking the catch behind the wicket.

MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians produced a brilliant all-round display as they romped to a crushing 58-run win over table-toppers Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gayle's Storm

Gayle's innings left bowlers 'scared', says Donald

Allan Donald, the Pune Warriors coach, has said that his players were "scared" after the thunderous assault from Chris Gayle, which set up an enormous 130-run victory for Royal Challengers Bangalore. A day after the demoralising defeat, Donald admitted that he feared the "mental damage" the innings might have caused his players and said his biggest challenge was to keep them positive for the remaining eight matches.
"We came across a bloke yesterday who was just devastating," Donald told ESPNcricinfo in Bangalore. "I have never seen hitting like that in all my life. To see our guys getting pummeled like that was unbelievable. When I walked out for the first strategy break, I just saw people scared, really scared. I just mentioned to the players that if we don't pull this back here, he is going to take us down big time, which he did."
Donald realised that the bowlers were clueless and if he did not deliver a stern message, Gayle could play havoc, which he eventually did with ease. "When I looked at their faces and no one said a word, the only way for me was to be very firm in my message; we had to find a way," he said. "We also discussed in the meeting on the morning of the match that we had to bowl out batsmen who were not going to give up their wicket. We needed someone to stand up and do something special and stop the flow of runs."
As a response Donald observed blank faces. By the second timeout, in the 16th over, Gayle had doubled the team score, taking it past 200 and Donald was frustrated. "To me that plan was about how we were going to limit the damage in the next four overs. The plan was to go full into his pads and also vary the pace," Donald said
The mental scarring Gayle has inflicted on his players has left the coach worried. "How much damage has this done to us mentally? My job becomes even harder now and I have to make sure these guys are ready against another team that is struggling (Delhi Daredevils) on a ground we have never played (Raipur)," he said. "This group now needs to rally together."
Barring the pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (4-0-23-0) and Luke Wright (4-0-26-1), at the start and end of the Royal Challengers' innings, Gayle attacked the rest mercilessly. Donald was not shy to take the blame. He said the bowlers lacked consistency and the team was one experienced strike bowler short.
"We haven't been brilliant," he said. "We have been okay in certain games and really off the boil in the others. And that is one area where we have let ourselves down. We do not have an attack that is express pace; we don't have a Dale Styen or a Shuan Tait, though, we have fair bit of class in Kumar and Ashok Dinda."
At the same time, Donald pointed out, Gayle was unstoppable and intimidated the bowlers. "There were times during that knock where he just went ballistic, and then he took a little timeout and then he went again," Donald said with a chuckle.
After the match, he asked Gayle, "Why us?" Gayle said he was in the mood. "He has just said that is the best he has ever hit the ball in his life," Donald said.

I can't find a solution as to why we are not responding. I cannot fault the squad that we have got this year. Is it the failures of the last two years that is playing on everyone's minds or the losing streak that we are on at the moment? Is it affecting everybody? Allan Donald

After their confident victory against Chennai Super Kings, Warriors let the following two matches slip out of their hands against Sunrisers Hyderabad at home and then in Mohali against Kings XI Punjab. The erratic form has left even Donald confused.
"I can't find a solution as to why we are not responding," he said. "I cannot fault the squad that we have got this year. Is it the failures of the last two years that is playing on everyone's minds or the losing streak that we are on at the moment? Is it affecting everybody?"
The failure of marquee players has made matters worse for Donald. Yuvraj Singh, Ross Taylor, Angelo Matthews and Robin Uthappa have not played any innings of impact. Acting captain Aaron Finch has been the only batsman to score a half-century, striking up three fifties in six games.
"The whole team has been hot and cold," Donald said, expressing his frustration. "If you look at Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, they win the RCB games. The same goes for teams like Super Kings."
The absence of a stable captain at Warriors has been a point of fierce debate. The first-choice captains - Mathews and Ross Taylor - have been battling for form, forcing the team management to appoint Finch, who has led in the Big Bash, as a stand-in leader. "We never had a captain in three years leading us solidly," Donald said.
In their debut season in 2011, Warriors finished eighth out of nine teams in the season. Last year, they slid to the last position. This season they are ahead of last-placed Daredevils. According to Donald, there is no place to hide for Warriors. "We can't fault our preparations or our planning and strategies, we have been on the money," he said. "We just haven't been unable to put it together on the field. There are no excuses, there are no explanations and we have got to turn it around."

IPL 6 BIGGEST FLOPS

IPL 6: The biggest flops of the tournament so far

Here's a look at how some of the costliest players have performed in the tournament so far.

Irfan Pathan
After an underwhelming 2012 IPL season in which he managed just eight wickets (average 58.12, economy 7.75) and 176 runs from 17 matches, Irfan has made a lukewarm start to IPL 6. Like in 2012, the situation is much the same: Irfan's swing has been missing and his bowling at the death has been particularly flat. In the season opener against KKR, Irfan started off with a maiden over to Manvinder Bisla but his second produced 15 runs as Gautam Gambhir hit him for a four and six before Jacques Kallis ended the over with a lofted drive to the boundary. Irfan did not bowl again in the match.

A look at how some of the costliest players have performed in the first ten days of season six of the Indian Premier League.
In the loss to Rajasthan Royals, Irfan went wicketless in his four overs while conceding 31 runs. He gave up four runs in the first over, five in the seventh, 12 in the 11th and 10 in the 18th. When Delhi lost their third match in a row, to Mumbai Indians, Irfan started with a wicket-maiden opening over and bowled a top first spell of 2-14-1, but when he came back he bled 33 in two overs. The 14th over cost 11 with Dinesh Karthik hitting two fours through midwicket; in the 19th, Ambati Rayudu smacked 4, 6, 4, 6 in successive deliveries.
In the low-scoring loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Irfan bowled two tidy over for seven runs. When he came back to bowl the 18th he collected the big wicket of Thisara Perera and gave up just six runs. That prompted his captain to give Irfan the final over, with six to defend. But Dale Steyn hit six in two balls to hand Delhi their fourth consecutive loss. Again, bowling length proved fatal.

Jacques Kallis - three matches, 39 runs, average 13
The veteran South Africa has been an infrequent player in the Twenty20 format, playing just six matches - all for Royal Challengers Bangalore - in the last six months. In that time, his scores read: 16, 23, 0, 18, 0 and 0 (three in IPL 6 and three in last year's CLT20). In KKR's season opener, Kallis made 23 off 20 balls before pulling a half-tracker straight to midwicket; in the second match he was out for golden duck when wafting outside off stump; and in the next match Kallis charged Vinay Kumar and picked out the fielder at deep cover for 16. He has also gone wicketless in three matches, while conceding runs at 7.36 an over.

Ricky Ponting - 5 matches, 52 runs, average 10.05
Opening the batting, Ponting and Tendulkar have just managed two half-century stands together out of five games. As a matter of fact, on three occasions Mumbai lost its first wicket in the opening over. And chasing a formidable 179 for three, the openers failed yet again as Mumbai suffered a humiliating 87-run loss at the hands of Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium last night.
So far in IPL 6 Ponting has impressed with his captaincy and one awesome one-handed catch at extra cover, but as a batsman he has been a flop. Paired with Tendulkar in an opening stand that brings together two batsmen with a jaw-dropping 61,756 international runs between them , Ponting has also fallen flat. He has so far made 28 off 33 balls (stumped); 6 off 10 (caught at slip); and 0 off 6 (caught at mid-off). Those are poor returns from an international superstar purchased for $400,000 by a franchise looking for a winning formula.
Kumar Sangakkara - four matches, 82 runs, average 20.50
Having been given a stamp of faith from the owners of the Hyderabad-based franchise, the former Sri Lanka captain has come a cropper so far in IPL 6. Though Sunrisers Hyderabad won their first two matches their batting has been exposed as rather thin - especially with Shikhar Dhawan injured - and Sangakkara's failures have not helped. Against Pune Warriors he made 15 off 16 balls before charging and missing a legbreak; in the match with RCB Sangakkara got 16 off 17 balls and again dashed out of his crease only to perish; and in the loss to RCB in the return match he got a leading edge after making 23 off 24 balls. In the win over Delhi, Sangakkara made a run-a-ball 28.
A season strike-rate of 96.47 is just too low for the team's leader and most experienced batsman. Sangakkara has scored just nine boundaries in 85 balls faced.
Ross Taylor - three matches, 51 runs, average 17
The New Zealand batsman was swapped from Delhi to Pune during the off-season in a move directed at boosting a stagnating batting line-up but the results have been very average. Taylor has failed to cross 20 in any innings so far in IPL 6 and his strike-rate 87.93 is a major downer. He made a run-a-ball 19 in the loss to Hyderabad, 15 off 19 against Kings XI Punjab and 17 off 20 balls against Rajasthan Royals. At his fourth franchise in five IPL seasons, Taylor has not been of any help with the bat to a franchise that was a massive flop in their first two seasons.
